Does God find us funny?
The ramblings of an internet comedian
Does God have a sense of humor? Can he laugh? While these might not be the most pressing questions one might have about God, as a comedian who happens to be christian, I’ve thought about them a great deal.
Whether consciously or subconsciously, we can sometimes imagine God as beyond humor, that his omniscience prevents him from indulging in the lowly art of comedy. You might not feel this way, but I know others do. I post a lot of videos online, and around 50% of them are about Christianity. The most popular comment I get on all those videos is, “If God doesn’t find this funny, we’re doomed”. People have a hard time thinking about the God of the universe laughing at a TikTok, and if God isn’t laughing at the joke, should we?
Personally, I think God does have a sense of humor, though as a comedian I may be biased. The Bible says that God “created mankind in his image” (Genesis 1:27). We are a reflection of the glory of God, we bear the mark of our creator, and I believe, along with many other things, we inherited a sense of humor. If God did not invent humor, we could not have it. One could argue that God did not create sin, and humor could be sin, but I would say comedy can be a blessing to people in many circumstances (why people say “laughter is the greatest medicine”), and if James 1:17 says “every good and perfect gift is from above”, then humor is from God.
So if God created humor, that means he’s deeply funny. That he understands humor, and can weave together a joke better than any comedian on Netflix. He has the best timing, waiting years to deliver punchlines to the jokes he’s set up. He told a guy in the desert to build a boat. He picked Moses, the guy with a stutter, to lead all of the Israelites. He invented circumcision?!?
Yet, there’s a lot of things in the world that aren’t funny. And I don’t think horrible things like cancer or abuse are the punchlines to some cruel joke laid out by God. I do think that he gifts us comedy to get through those tough life things.
But does God find us funny? I hope so, otherwise “I’m doomed”. As someone who jokes a lot about God and Jesus, I pray he finds me funny. I would like to think that if you’re making a joke about God, and your intention is not to ridicule or mock, he would love to laugh with you. Hopefully, over the course of this newsletter, we can arrive at a more satisfying, complete answer, but that is all I have to say for now.
This newsletter is not just for Christians! If you enjoy comedy, this can also be for you. Not everything I write will be about God, some things will just be about the joke writing process, or things that I think are funny. I will also be putting up some comics that me and my wife have made, and doing some Q&A.
Any and all are welcome on this newsletter, thank you so much for reading! I can’t wait to see what all God has in store for this upcoming year. God bless!
Q&A
“If you could be any plant, what plant would you be?” - @its.aubrey.lianne
Phenomenal question! I would want to be a Venus Fly Trap because I think it would give me something to do. I would get bored with sitting around all day, but catching bugs would be a pretty good diversion.
“What’s your favorite Bible verse?” - @jace.1738
Ephesians 2:8-10
“What is more popular: chairs or meat?” - @hatcherbeach
What a wild question… absolutely incredible… I would say meat. There’s probably more chairs than meat in the world, but I think we talk about meat more often than chairs, so I would go meat.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
This is the section where I put my favorite one liner that I’ve written in the past week. No promises that it’s good.
“Growing up, my mother could never afford to buy gingerbread houses, so we had to make gingerbread studio apartments”
Recommend to a friend perhaps?

I love it. Keep it up 👍🏻
